Yes Indeedy, ‘hit’ the Isle ‘o Wight last weekend for a bit of live-o dubstep action! Big shout to Mr. TS and the Yes Yes collective over there, workin hard to spread the sound.
This was the first Dubstep/Dub night ever on the Isle of Wight, felt kinda special as well, totally not what i was expecting…..
I remember when Tom asked if i wanted to play at his night, my first thought was ‘who the hell’s gunna come out for a dubstep night on the isle ‘o friggin wight?!’ taking the assumption that the only thing that happened over the water was a bingo night every Thursday….
But hell no, turned up and the venue was sick, well nice and pretty plush too, right by the bus station in Newport (The Captial of the Isle of Wight allegedly), well nice stage as well, with a proper dj box, i was expecting to play in like a rotten pub near a disused canal or something…..
Apologies yoonz isle ‘o wighters….my assumptions were wrong ok, never again will i think of the isle of wight as one big ageing cess pit filled with werthers originals
It was a pretty good turn out all in all as well…..i couldn’t quite believe that anyone would be into dubstep over there….but i guess the whole bestival-dubstep connection sparked somethin off for ze islanders
Out to the Tala Steppa who played some wicked dub to start off, battling away with those mad technical cd decks like a trooper……And Clev awesome selection….dubbed out vibes!…..I was itching to get up there and play all night that stage was well inviting, and i knew there were some peeps who wanted the heavy dubstep riddims to commence
I was thinkin about the transition between reggae/dub to dubstep, i guess i thought ‘well i better start off pretty dubbed out and work up to it’….out to MC Cooly Haste, ya joker…..finally got my name right……

Played that new Gatekeeper track ‘Let Go’ (forthcoming Punch Drunk - DRUNK004) early on, lovin that one, real detroit techno vibe, (cue a bemused dancefloor)…..followed by the B side off DRUNK003 as well (RSD)…..before thinking ‘fuck this’ and dropping a new Kromestar bit
now we’re rollin! Set highlights had to be droppin ‘Blackout’ by Jack Sparrow (out now on Senseless records) been waitin to play that out….big tune! and it went off for ‘Bingo’ by Benga, benga choonage always does it!
There were loads of (don’t wanna sound harsh but…) kids there…..so yeh out to the youngsters! they seemed to be likin the sound as well…..it was funny when i walked outside with my record bag sat down and listened to these young geezers talking about goin to DMZ and playin their dubstep ringtones to each other…….the virus is spreading big time!
oh yeh, shout out to the cab driver that took me to the other side of the island after the rave up….£34?! you what mate?! wouldn’t shut up about his jet ski as well…did my swede in……i was tired and sloshed, stumblin about like a tart…..decided to park myself in my dad’s garden for a late night chillout fag…..bad mistake….stumbled right through my dad’s ’show home garden’ crushing multiple plants on the way, reaching the patio i looked back to see the carnage i had created….Sillyness. I would have blamed it on a large animal if i hadn’t left my rizla’s on the patio table to prove that i was out in the patio earlier that morning…….
On that bombshell……yehhhh…..isle of wight…big things.
